Who’s the Hero? NOT You!

Well hello fellow Social Mediaites.  I just made that up – feel free to make it your own.

Today is NOT about you.  Neither was yesterday, but yesterday you didn’t know it yet – so starting today – it is no longer about you.  What the HELL is this woman talking about??

I’m talking about how you market to your clients.  I’ve stated it many times before – your relationship with your clients is….. ???  That’s RIGHT!  It’s a relationship.  Think back to one of your worst dates ever.  You know – where the guy/gal on the other end of the table was all like, “me me this, and me me that, oh and also there was this one time where I, I , I and me me me …….” And oh. my. GOD will the endless droning ever stop??

Well it did stop and I hope you never called him/her back because they need a wake up call.  Maybe a wake up call a little like this one.  Your business as a marketing professional should not start and end with you.  Should you be mentioned?  Absolutely.  Not to do so would be equally asinine.  While your current pitch to get Social Media work might sound a little like this:

“I’m a marketing professional that has worked with the likes of ___(fill in the blank)____.  I took over his marketing efforts in June of 2010 and have single handedly grown his business 10-fold.”

When it should sound more like this:

“As a marketing professional, I was given the opportunity to work with ___(fill in the blank)____.  In 12 months time, his business grew 10-fold. If you’re interested, I can walk you through the steps he followed to make that happen.”

It’s amazing what results come from someone who really knows what they’re talking about – with a side of humility. Give your client their due – it’ll come back in your favor every time.

Even Spielberg Got Rejected

Did you just say you don’t have a fear of rejection?  Don’t believe you.  I mean – there must be a few of you out there that are fearless, but let’s face it.  The one thing that freezes most of us in our tracks is fear of a two-letter-word.

NO!

This video is very clear – we’re all (regardless of our social status or level of success) going to be rejected at some point in our life.  Here’s the thing though:  You don’t know that you’ll be rejected unless you ask.  The fear of the two-letter-word stops most of us in our tracks.

  • “If I ask for that raise, my boss won’t give it to me – so why bother?”
  • “If I ask him out, he’ll say no.  Then I’ll be embarrassed.”
  • “If I go after that promotion, someone more qualified will get the job.”
  • “I can’t go after that big name client. I’m not a big name, myself.”

Stop it!

  • If you ask for that raise – what if your boss says yes?!  You have better quality of life with just one question.  Plus, you come off as someone who is confident – which certainly isn’t a bad thing come time for that promotion.
  • Is it possible that he’ll say no?  Sure – on to the next one.  Why would you be embarrassed?  Are you so arrogant to think that you are a match for everyone?  Let me clear that up for you.  You’re not – so brush your shoulders off and on to the next one.
  • If you go after that promotion – could you get passed up?  Sure!  If you do get passed up, you’ve gained interviewing experience (which is never bad) in case you get the opportunity to interview there again.  It shows you’re interested in growing with the company.  If you decide you don’t want to give it another shot with your current employer – it gives you the interview experience to take to interviews with potential new employers.
  • If you go after that big name client – sure…. They could go with another firm that’s larger and well known.  Worst that could happen?  You’re a name in their mind.  I guarantee that smaller businesses follow that company.  Maybe your name comes up with them.  Or best case – they hire YOU because, let’s be honest.  Sometimes clients buy not just experience or brand.  Sometimes they buy YOU.  Your character.  Your confidence.

More than any of that, being told no isn’t the end of your world.  Every time you get knocked down, you have to use that mental muscle to pull yourself back up.  It makes you stronger.

Your homework?  Do one thing this week that puts you in this zone.  Ask the guy or girl out that you’ve been wanting to (if they’re single.)  Ask for that raise at work.  The worse that can happen is that you end up stronger for it in the end.  I’m going to do the same.  Have to practice what I preach, right??

Chaos – Where The Living Gets Good!

I’ve just come back from an event with [Pattern].  As always, networking with people has provided me with a reminder of why I do what I do.

I met so many people tonight.  Some of those were established business owners.  Some of them new businesses.  Others – up and comers.  This blog is for you.  The up and comers.  While I hope I provided some sort of encouragement to you – I know that there’s strength in numbers.  I also want you to know you’re not alone.   One of my friends, Scott, has agreed to let me share his most recent blog post with you.

My hope is that you not stay in the place that you are now – but let this be a little push or a huge shove forward into the place you should be.  The place where YOU become the encourager for another up and comer.  Live.  YOU!  LIVE!  No longer is it OK to exist and hope that you make it.  Take steps.  Get out of your head.  Step outside of logic.  Chaos is where the living gets good.

I hope you enjoy his blog – but more than that, I hope you do something with it.

Last night consisted of a myriad of vivid dreams. One, in particular, woke me up with tears dripping down my cheeks.

Growing up, my Mom always hung enormous photos of my brother and I on the hallway walls most near our bedrooms. One particular wall seemed like a prison lineup of school photos of the both of us, sequenced chronologically over the previous 8 years. They nearly were. It was a wall of nerdy, quirky, humorous, and embarrassing mug shots.

As we grew older, we started acquiring hobbies, and identities. So, as you would imagine, our photos began to parallel those changes. My brother had photos of him doing his hobbies. I had photos of me doing mine. Intermixed were photos of our whole family, Mom and Dad included.

All of these, of course, are photographs. They are accurate and definitive glimpses of a moment in time. Frozen memories behind a pane of glass.

My dream last night, as you may imagine, was a bit more.

Picture your family, let’s say five years ago, meeting together at the house you will always consider your one true home. And picture a painting on a specific wall of that house, which you will always remember. This isn’t a photo, this is a painting. This is a painting that changes with time.

This was my dream. Bear with me.

The first time I notice the painting, it is of my Grandpa and Grandma. They were beautiful people. As I look at the painting, Grandpa begins to fade away, until he is gone. As there were lineups of photos on the walls of my houses growing up, consider a wall of paintings on this wall. To the right was a painting of my Grandfather and Grandmother. They, too, were beautiful individuals. Grandfather fades away, until he is gone. Looking back to the left, Grandma is alone in her painting. Looking right, Grandmother has faded, and is gone. Their painting is now a sheet of black.

I don’t dare look back at Grandma’s painting, because I know the inevitable outcome. I knew this would become a painting that I would never want to buy. Empty. Lonely. Black.

Their painting is now a sheet of black.

In my dream, I receive a letter from Grandma. She had long passed. In her letter, she tells of a painting that has been in our family throughout the generations. This painting is a painting in motion. It changes as our family does. It is a timeline only seen by who is looking at it.

Looking at it, I see our immediate family. Mom, Dad, brother, and me. This particular painting is a rendering of a photo that a park ranger took of our family in the Smokies a few years ago. The four of us were there. Then, one wasn’t.

I wasn’t.

When I woke up at 4:00, I started sobbing. Not because I saw myself dying, but because I didn’t see myself living.

I don’t know when I am going to die. Truth be told, I hope I outlive all of you. But, if in the enormous possibility that I don’t, I hope I live my life alive.

I’ve lived most of my life in the fear of being beaten, in perhaps every sense of the word. But, I haven’t. Not nearly in any sense of the word. I’m learning to live my life in a way that motivates me, that pushes me, and makes me happy. And in that sense, I won’t be beaten. And in that sense, hopefully, I won’t fade to black.

So what’s keeping you from living?  Don’t just say you want it.  Seek it. Find it. Do it.

I Have to Choose between Email and Social Media? … No.

I’ve heard some marketing gurus say that email is soon going to be the dead language of the marketing world.  I say something different.  Language doesn’t die if you know how to keep it alive, so keep email alive, we shall.

Marketing via email and marketing via social media typically reaches two very different audiences.  However, there is absolutely some overlap.  In fact, there’s quite a bit of overlap.

As with any post, any blog, any newsletter, you absolutely MUST keep your audience in mind.  Just because it’s interesting to you doesn’t mean it will be to the people who’ve requested to follow your business… so here’s the plan:

Your first goal is to get your email newsletter list compiled.  Your subject matter needs to be something that is so compelling… So inspiring… So shocking (in good taste of course)… that your audience can’t help but forward it.  Here’s the thing though – you also need to provide a way for your audience that uses both social media AND email to share the story – EASILY.  Humans – we’re such a lazy group! Give us an “easy” button and we’re set.  Make us save a picture to our hard drive, find said picture, upload it to Facebook – then post it… and we’re spent for the day.  So we’d rather just not.  Provide us a button.  Approve.  There it is!  And like magic – more followers.  And you look all the more genius for it.

Looks like you’ve got some writing… or research… or editing to do.  I’ll leave you to it then.

How Do I Find The Time to Blog?

If you aren’t blogging, would you please tell me why?  Probably the #1 issue is time if you’re like most small business owners.  I usually find myself rush, rush, rushing through my day, doing all the “must dos” and then right before bed (no matter how late) – I find my inspiration… and I write.

You have an audience whether you can see them or not.  That audience has a need for information that YOU canprovide.  There are creative ways to work around the time issue.
Posting on Facebook and Twitter is good.  No mistake about it.  But blogging is less about you and more about your end users.  It’s about taking care of them.  Find things that interest them or relate to them.  If you own a club, you have an all adult audience.  Post events that are coming up in the community that relate to them.  Run a family eatery?  Blog about anything family related.  It doesn’t have to be about food.

Now comes the time issue.  We’re all well aware of the time crunch.  Do you have employees?  Do you value them and what they have to say?  Some of them will likely have creative writing talents, maybe some paint, some may be in bands.  Have them volunteer to do more for the business.  Maybe some have music they would be willing to have you share in the restaurant.  Perhaps the artist would like his or her work displayed on your walls.  And that writer – maybe they would like to be scheduled an extra hour a week to come in and do your weekly or bi-weekly blog.  Let them know that you’re particularly looking to start paying your blog more attention and are looking to hand that responsibility over.  Do a writing audition.  Maybe more than one employee gets the part.

Give your blogger an assignment once a week or once a month.  Give them specific parameters that you’d like them to blog about and let them work their magic.  Make sure you give them the credit!  Involving employees in different parts of your business not only builds strong morale among your employees, but it also lets your customers know each one of your staff members a little bit better.

What are you waiting for?  Don’t you have some writing to do?? Go, write.  But have fun with it!

You want me to WHAT?!

And this, ladies and gentlemen is the truth.  There will be clients that want the world from you.  Once they get the world – they’ll want the sun… and the moon.  And the truth is that you’ll want to provide it for them to your own detriment and to the detriment of your other clients.  There will always be someone that you just can’t please no matter the hours you spend with/for them, no matter the effort put forth, no matter the amount of sleep lost.  Now there will be two possible outcomes.  Outcome #1 – You continue trying to please said client, suffer inordinate amounts of stress, possibly lose other (quality) clients due to time spent on this one – OR – Outcome #2 – You fire your client.  Yes.  YOU are the one in control of your stress level and you are the one responsible for keeping it at a safe and tolerable level.

Did a Social Media Professional just say….???

Hey you. Yes… You. You said you wanted to grow your business, right? Here’s the thing: You’re never going to do it hiding behind a computer. That’s right. I said it.

Our culture is on social media overload. One of the reasons I hear multiple people say they veer away from social sites is that we have lost the art of truly connecting with each other – and to an extent, these people are right. Social media is just one of many avenues to get and stay connected.

Networking in person is still a completely viable way to grow your contacts – and in turn your business. The difference now is that you use social sites to help you at your networking events. That’s right. I’m telling you to do some social stalking. *Disclaimer* – I’m not really telling you to stalk people. :-)

But what you CAN do is join local meetups. On these sites, you can actually see who will be there. Decide on a handful of people you’d like to meet there by checking out what they do. Google their names to find out businesses they’re in – or even better sometimes – is who THEY know.

Information is gold and it’s now at your fingertips. Let your fingers do the walking, but get your body there in person.  I promise that the extra effort will be worth it.

Quality AND Quantity

In social media, twitter in particular, a lot of people are focused on numbers.  While yes, social media is a numbers game, it’s also important to recognize how much time you’re spending on gaining followers that have absolutely nothing to do with what you have to offer.

You may have fallen victim to the “trends”.  You may see those tags that are trending to the left on your twitter page and be tempted to add them to your own posts.  Why?

Let’s take a practical approach to this:  You own an all natural dog food company.  You’re excited and you know you have a quality product at a fair price.  Right now, if I were to follow “trends” on twitter, my post might look a little like this:

Top 5 reasons your dog will benefit from all natural dog food <insert link> #vicodin #RepublicanMovies #Hawaii

So, here’s what you could possibly end up with: Vicodin heads that like to watch Republican movies and would really like to vacation in Hawaii.  I kid, but you get the idea here.

The moral of this story is, of course, target your audience!  Yes, you want to have a lot of followers, but you want to have a lot of followers that are interested in what you have to say.  I think what might be just slightly (note the hint of sarcasm) more effective would look a little more like this:

Top 5 reasons your dog will benefit from all natural dog food <insert link> #dog #DogFood #pets #natural #food

Just remember.  Numbers are important.  Quality numbers are gold.  Happy tweeting!
